By: Ekaterina Ramirez

This Tuesday I had a pleasure to participate in a public speaking workshop which was a part of Women In Leadership mentorship program. In addition to spending the evening in a company with remarkable women, it was an amazing up-level for my public speaking skills.

This year my first breakthrough in understanding myself as a speaker was with Pamela Hart when I discovered how to create a powerful presence on the stage with my voice, my energy and verbal articulation.

Yesterday it was a different leap forward. Throughout the workshop we practiced receiving – gracefully receiving a round of applause from the audience after giving our little talks.

I found this practice useful because most of us (including myself) have a tendency to run away or shrink after our speech. It is like we feel some guilt for being on a stage and expressing our brilliance. Yet a graceful reception of applause from an audience is a powerful close of the presentation.

During the workshop, while practicing receiving the audience love, I had thoughts popping up in my mind that it is arrogant to enjoy people clapping you. But it is actually not. It is an element of communication with an audience. It is a way to stay connected with people energetically. It is an opportunity to give an audience the space to express their gratitude.

An ability to receive a round of applause with an open smile, direct eye contact, and graceful thank you’s to people is beautiful.

Sincerely,
